Race Bike Stable

We have several renowned bikes in our 'Stable' at TST which can be seen at our workshop or at many shows, events and parades throughout the UK and Europe.

1983 Suzuki RGB500 MK8

This bike was found in a last raced state sitting in the front room of its then owner.

Its present owner, Tony Salt of TST Racing & Performance Tyres of Warrington, purchased this RGB not knowing of its racing pedigree with the intention of riding it on track days. It was not until we tried to replace parts for the forks, brakes and fairings that it became apparent that they were not standard race parts and were indeed works parts ‘obtained’ from the then HB Suzuki Team in an attempt to make the bike more competitive with the then new 3cylinder 500cc Hondas.

This put an end to the track day idea!

The rebuild of the RGB has taken over 12 months to bring it up to the condition you see her in today.

This actual machine was used by Barry Sheene when he finished 14th in the 1983 World Championship, despite only competing in 4 rounds.

Results for the 1983 season were: -

10th Kyalami, 7th LeMans,  9th Monza, 9th Silverstone

Barry also had his last international win at Oliver's Mount on this very machine.

Many modifications were made by Barry to this bike indicating that it was his ‘No.1’ bike.

But, the story continues.

Yorkshire’s favorite son, Mick Grant, used this bike in 1984!

Mick achieved many fine results on this bike in 1984 as below: -

3rd Senior and 6th Classic TT @ 1.58.26 [114.68mph average]

Mick also set the fastest lap for 500cc  2strokes at the TT of 117.84mph, a record that  still remains unbroken.

2nd North West 200 @112.8mph average in pouring rain

5th British Shell Oils Championship

9th ITV World of Sport Superbike Championship

6th MCN Masters Championship

1st Macau GP and setting the fastest lap.

Its last international win was with Mick on board at the 1984 Macau Grand Prix where Mick set a new lap record.

Mick is still riding the bike in classic parades today using his own No.10 Heron Suzuki/Men Only livery as it was when he last rode the bike in 1984.

Tony remembers working on this bike with both Mick and Barry, it holds great sentimental value and is most definitely not for sale.

1982 Works Suzuki RGB500 XR45

This actual machine was manufactured in 1982 for Randy Mamola and took him to 2nd place in the 1983 World Championship.

Randy then left Suzuki at the end of 1983 and joined the

Honda team in 1984 carrying the No. 2 plate with him.

The bike then was passed onto the Dutch champion Boet Van-Dulmen for the 1984 season where the Suzuki started to show her age against the faster works Hondas & a host of 3 cylinder  bikes which all proved to be very quick.

Boet stayed with the RGB and many riders including Barry Sheene could not better the flying Dutchman who finished an admirable 8th place in the 1984 World Championship on this bike.

Boet sold this RGB to a Manchester race enthusiast who supported a couple of club racers with this bike.

The RGB proved to have an unfair advantage over the majority of the field and was retired to the back of a shed in Manchester until being rescued and lovingly rebuilt to its present condition by the enthusiastic team at TST.

1985 Suzuki GSXR750

This unique motorcycle is the actual machine that was used by Mick Grant in his successful 1985 Superstock Challenge season.

The bike has been kept as original as possible and you can still see the battle scars from an ’off’ that Mick had when the oil filter came loose spilling oil onto the rear wheel. This accident caused Suzuki to change the filter mounting on production machines.

The bike sports works F1 forks, Titanium exhaust system and a total loss ignition system, the engine was kept standard other than the lack of starter motor and alternator.
